im having a hard time figuring this bit out in order to recruit troops cause the only way i've found to be able to get renown is trough winning battles but thats hard to do when you can't recruit any troops and if you lose a battle you lose about 3-10x the amount of renown you would've earned as well as losing all troops so you just get put in a never ending loop of losing money and renown
So everytime I go into a battle it says "you stand to gain X renown if you win this battle". But in the end I get like X/2, X/3. Last time it said I would gain 10 and got 5.

In prior Mount & Blade titles, renown directly affected party size. This meant that any battle, no matter how small, brought a tangible result in the sense that renown increased, which would then increase party size. As currently implemented, Clan Tier (based on renown) seems to be main affector of party size. But once you hit tier 6, you're done!
Renown will be earned by your character as you progress through the Mount&Blade games. Your character's renown is basically how well known they are throughout Calradia or Eastern Europe. The other lords and rulers also have renown, which over time, assuming you are relatively successful, you will surpass. You can gain renown in a number of ways:
